I couldn't believe the parade of people who came into my work today to wish me well on my surgery tomorrow. Finally at 1:45 I broke down crying, overwhelmed by all the support, hugs and well wishes. I had myself so prepared for tommorrow. Then I get a phone call at 4 pm saying my surgery is canceled until next Tuesday because there are no beds in ICU. Needless to say I'm upset.
For the ones who are wondering what I'm talking about........I was to have my left lung removed tomorrow, due to cancer. I found out on March 7 after having a pre-op X-ray for another matter. Well I guess I'll cheer up now and look at it this way........It gives my right lung another week of healing and being smoke free.

Hello Kim:

There really can be advantages to the extra time. See the article on Post Operative Complications. Sometimes a week can really make a difference and as long as it was necessary to pur off the procedure you may as well look at the bright side.

First off, a belated but very warm welcome to Freedom. Although I have not posted to you before tonight, I have been thinking about you and your scheduled surgery tomorrow. I can certainly understand your disappointment at the change but am so inspired by your ability to see the silver lining! That wonderful optimism - along with the extra time for healing - will serve you well in the weeks to come.

We're so glad to have you--and your sister, headbo --aboard. As you've already discovered, there is a "magic" that happens here between amazing people sharing their strength, their wisdom, and their support. I'm looking forward to continuing this journey with you.

Dear Kito, I can hear your anger and frustration at the hospital effup. My dear friend had a tumor removed from her lung a year ago (she's ok), and I got see first hand all that one has to go through during such a process. We really have to cling strong to our quits.

I can only imagine how disappointed you are. I know how disappointed I am after taking weeks of psyching myself that everything will be all right. Deep down in my heart, I know it will be.

Just think that in only one more week, the surgery will be done, you will be cancer free and we have the rest of our lives to be smoke free and put this nightmare behind us.

You are doing the right thing by putting this delay in its right perspective. Look at it only on the bright side. I truely believe in my heart every cloud has a silver lining. Sometimes it just takes a bit of a treasure hunt to find the silver. You hang in there.

Dear Kim - I too am sorry your surgery had to be postponed.

I am glad though you have friends around you who care and a sister who is as committed to her quit as you are. I think both of you are couragous women who have made a life-enhancing decision at a difficult time - which just shows it can be done. Thank you for sharing the journey with us - and feel free to share or not as you feel comfortable.

I am so sorry to hear about your news. I know what it's like to get yourself in the frame of mind to do something that is difficult, only to find out at the last minute it's been postponed to a later date. Just remember everything happens for a reason, even if we don't understand it at the time. God has a plan for all of us.

Hi Kim,

I know it's got to be stressful, building yourself up for such a big event, only to have it postponed. I must say, and it might seem foolish now, but I believe such things happen for a grander reason. I know it sounds like a platitude now, but I'd be willing to bet that a week or month or year from now, you'll be looking back and thinking, "Wow! It's a great thing my surgery was moved!" Or it might be someone's life was saved by being able to be in ICU right now ahead of you, while you'll be AOK waiting a week for that bed. Even if you never know where that blessing fell, I promise you that blessing didn't miss it's mark!

There is nothing more I can say that has not been said, this is just to let you know I am thinking of you, you must have been devastated to get that phone call, but it is like you said thats another week of healing for your right lung, God bless and good luck , I'm sure once they get this out of the way, you and your sister WILL have many happy smoke free years.

I want to thank you all for your kind words, thoughts, prayers, hugs etc. I'm ok now, it was just a big let down after getting all geared up for it. To my sister Kelly, thanks for always being there. My friend Sharon has always said......Things happen for a reason, and I truly believe that.......someone needed that bed alot more than I did.

Tuesday is not far away, look how fast 1M,1W,2 D went and tomorrow is Thursday already! Thanks for all your support everyone.

Hi Kim, just logged on to see if there was any news on how your surgery went. I am also 44 years old, and so I feel an additional bond to you (first bond is that we're both active members of Freedom!).
